Author: Dr. Ahmad Al-Hassiny (iDD)
This document summarizes a clinician’s published review and reflects expert opinion rather than peer-reviewed evidence. Functions are as reported at the time of publication (June 2026) and may change.
1. Overview
Realtime Intelligence is an AI-based function within Medit’s scanning software. Once scanning stops, it reviews the scan data and the tooth preparation and flags items that may need attention, covering scan quality, preparation, and occlusion. It also captures images of the preparation.
Its stated purpose is to identify scan and preparation problems at the point of capture, rather than after laboratory feedback or at try-in.
2. Scope & Compatibility
- Indications: Crowns and inlays (bridges and veneers planned for later).
- Compatible Scanners: Medit i900 series, i700, i700w, and i600.
- Delivery: Released globally as a Medit Link update.
3. Functions
Scan Review
- Capture More Data: Gaps in the scan are highlighted with directional arrows, which disappear once sufficient data have been captured.
- Clean Overlapping Data: Layered or stitching errors, such as those caused by blood, saliva, movement, or an unsuitable scan path, are flagged. The area can be deleted and rescanned, or realigned with the Optimize function.
Preparation Review
Prepared teeth are detected automatically and evaluated against the criteria below.
Function |
Output |
Requirement |
Undercut Review |
Undercut areas displayed in blue, based on an automatic path of insertion |
— |
Reduction Depth |
Preparation compared with pre-operative data; areas of potentially insufficient reduction flagged in red (default threshold below 1.5 mm, adjustable) |
Pre-operative scan |
Interproximal Space |
Clearance to adjacent teeth; tight contacts flagged in red |
— |
Occlusal Space |
Clearance to the opposing teeth |
Occlusion data |
Margin Line |
Curvature around the margin visualized to indicate whether it appears continuous or uneven |

Occlusion Review
- Occlusion Balance: Detects over-contact, anterior overload, and left–right imbalance.
- Occlusal Patterns: Interference between the arches is shown as a color map.
Automatic HD Image Capture
During scanning, high-resolution images of the preparation are captured from up to five angles. Medit states that these are upscaled to sixteen times the resolution of its existing HD camera. They are stored by tooth number and direction in Medit Link Attachments and sent to the laboratory with the case.
4. Workflow Integration
- Timing: Analysis starts automatically once sufficient scan data have been captured, after a minimum number of scan images.
- Supported Stages: Pre-operation, Operation, and Occlusion; not available in the Scan Body or Face Scan stages.
- Stage Order: Medit recommends placing the stage containing the prepared tooth last, because some analyses require occlusal data.
- Modes & Settings: Simple UI mode and Offline mode (no internet connection required). The Use GPU setting must be enabled.
- Smart Scan Review: After scanning, this window combines the standard scan review with the preparation checks, showing layered data, insufficient data, and preparation analysis in one interface.
5. Observations & Limitations
- Reported Performance: In Dr. Al-Hassiny’s clinical use, it reliably identified insufficient occlusal reduction and preparations close to the adjacent tooth.
- Reported Gaps: It did not highlight margins obscured by blood or soft tissue, and was not accurate in every case.
- Role of the Output: The flags are guidance rather than a diagnosis, and the clinical decision remains with the clinician. The reduction-depth flag depends on the threshold set.
6. Target Audience
- Clinicians preparing crowns or inlays who want scan and preparation problems flagged at the point of capture rather than at try-in.
7. Final Thoughts
Realtime Intelligence brings software-driven analysis directly into the scanning process, helping clinicians assess both scan and preparation quality before the patient leaves. While still in its early stages and currently limited to crowns and inlays, it offers a promising step toward more consistent digital workflows.
